What You Do After You Eat Matters More Than You Think
If you’re anything like me, the warmer weather is
inviting. It just makes you want to get outside a little more.
And it’s a great time to come back to one simple habit that can make a real difference in your health.
Not a workout program. Not a major lifestyle overhaul.
Just this:
Moving after you eat.
Why This Matters
Most people sit after meals. It feels natural. But research shows that even light movement after eating can significantly reduce blood sugar spikes. In fact, a study published in Diabetes Care (DiPietro et al., 2013) found that short bouts of walking after meals were actually more effective for blood sugar control
than one longer walk later in the day.
And over time, those spikes are connected to things like low energy, weight gain, increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, and even cognitive decline.
It Doesn’t Take Much
What’s interesting is that it doesn’t take much to make a difference.
In another study published in Diabetologia (Reynolds et al., 2016), just 10–15 minutes
of light activity after meals helped significantly lower blood sugar levels compared to sitting.
That could be a short walk, a few sit-to-stands, light band exercises, or even just moving around the house.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be something.
Why I Emphasize This
This is something I come back to often with clients, because while structured workouts are important, what you do throughout the rest of your day matters just as much. These small windows of movement can have a big impact over time.
A
Simple Place to Start
If you’re looking for one simple place to start this week, try this:
After one meal a day, spend about 10 minutes moving. Nothing intense. Just don’t sit right away.
The Bigger Picture
For a lot of people, this becomes a turning point. When your body starts handling energy better, it becomes easier to build strength, improve balance, and even think more clearly.
